Music education involves modeling, sharing, inspiring, and cultivating a learning environment conducive to a well-rounded student. Necessary in all phases of life, music serves as a catalyst for positive social, psychological, and educational development. Music education integrates all areas of learning within the curriculum. Knowledge of foreign language, history, science, math and literature is learned. Implementing music literacy within the lesson enables students to enhance critical thinking and problem solving skills. Music learning is similar to language development. A child develops the human language first aurally and then written. Music is learned aurally and then should be studied through its written language, music theory. Like reading, music opens a world of possibilities to an individual child. Music education promotes multicultural understanding and sensitivity. The human race consists of an array of ethnicities, religions, and practices. The understanding of diversity, partnered with cooperative learning, perpetuates growth in maturity and self-disciplines. Implementing world music within lesson plans will ensure students acquire a cross-cultured learning and value diversity. The study of music as an academic subject is necessary to a schools curriculum. Music education cultivates meaningful experiences and lifelong learning. The immense power of music benefits a students learning environment exponentially. As a music educator my teaching will be instrumental to the development of my students learning and the development of my learning as well. Amber Lindsay
